Don't Book Now

2014 has already boasted more books than boozy nights out, which might not be so bad now that i'm on the cusp of 24 and take to hangovers like cheese to a grater (and yup, that means not very well). My aim is to get through at least a book a month, and what with nearly 3 hours of my day spent travelling to work, i've cut an awesome book shaped hole into that measly 12 book target. Okay, so graphic novels beef up this list too, but they're editorial adventures all their own. Here's a list of what i've managed so far in 2014, of which I'm excited to plump up over the next few months, and would most definitely recommend.

Chuck Palahnuik - 'Diary': Yes, sure, infamous author of that movie with Brad Pitt in a luscious, grubby wife beater, I get it. But Chuck Palahnuik has so much more to offer. Merging a line between the static life of an artist and the dumbfounded theories of Waytansea Island's residents, this 'coma diary' is insulting, it's heartbreaking and its proposterous. Lush, Palahnuik, pure lush.

Rob Hunter - 'The New Ghost': Plush Scandi-blue hues. A ghost tale with a charming twist. A short ode to life and death. I don't know what to fall in love with more, Hunter's editorial spread or his story.

Stephen King - 'Joyland': A lovely chum passed me this book over dinner and I can't thank her enough. Most people note Stephen King for his broody horror dabbles but this crooners crime thriller set at a North Carolina amusement park is charming, funny, sad and a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs.

Charles Burns - 'Black Hole': I remember swooning over this in a comic book shop in Camden over a year ago, only for the shop assistant to humph his way in with a 'better go easy before you try that one', Challenge? Accepted. For someone that is relatively new to graphic novels, this is a bit of a churner, but the illustrations are delicious and the freaky pseudo tale, pretty enthralling if you don't mind plenty of nip, and I do mean nip.
